Doria Dee Johnson
Doria Johnson worked within the system to change the system for the better and was a tireless activist who was a champion for justice.
The Doria Dee Johnson Scholarship will benefit an Evanston Township High School senior who has chosen to attend a Historically Black College or University.
Doria was a tireless activist, whose love of family took her on journey of discovery, a journey that would influence her life’s work—The lynching of her great-great-grandfather, Anthony Crawford, which spurred the migration of many African American families from Abbeville County, SC to Evanston, IL.
She was a vital instrument in the US 109th Senate’s Resolution 39, an apology to the victims of lynching and their descentants, for the failure of the Senate to enact anti-lynching legislation, which is the precursor for the recently passed Emmit Till Antilynching Act of 2022. Even in death she remains a powerful agent of change and restorative justice. Most of all, we remember her as someone we called friend.
